Where do mosquitoes breed in East Tennessee?

Female mosquitoes require a source of stagnant water in which they will lay their eggs. This standing water can be found in many areas near your property. Common mosquito breeding grounds include:

  • Ponds, marches, and bogs
  • Puddles
  • Birdbaths or fountains
  • Pools or spas
  • Garden planters
  • Children’s playsets
  • Stacks of tires
  • Buckets
  • Clogged gutters/drains

Where Are Mosquito Eggs Laid?

Mosquito eggs are minuscule and rarely seen, but it’s still important to know where they are found. In order to lay eggs, a female mosquito needs to be nearby a source of standing water. This can be anything from a deep pool of water to a shallow puddle. The female mosquito will lay anywhere from 100 to 300 eggs at a time. These eggs are submerged into the standing water. The raft of eggs can look like a speck floating in the water, only about ¼ inch long.

Do Mosquitoes Need Water?

Yes, water is needed for mosquito eggs to hatch. Some species will lay their eggs directly on the water, while others will lay their eggs nearby the source of standing water. While rare, eggs that are laid too far away from the water are able to survive for years before hatching. However, in general, mosquitoes need water to reproduce.

Mosquito Breeding Grounds in East Tennessee

Mosquitoes are opportunistic and can turn the smallest puddle of water into the perfect place to lay their eggs. Unfortunately for you, this makes many areas in your lawn or garden susceptible to becoming a mosquito breeding ground.  This makes it important to know how to prevent mosquitoes in the first place by eliminating the things that attract them. Professional mosquito exterminators at Johnson Pest Control can help locate potential breeding grounds near your home and eliminate them before mosquito season.
