Are Mosquitoes Attracted to Light?

Mosquitoes are active when the sunlight is low, meaning dawn and dusk. During the daytime, mosquitoes prefer to hide and rest in shadier spots. At dawn and dusk, mosquitoes use light to find their hosts. This has led some people to think that mosquitoes are attracted to light, but that’s not exactly the case.

Mosquitoes do not see light the same way we do. They typically navigate by using natural light from the moon and stars. Artificial lights, then, can be a natural deterrent to mosquitoes that could become disoriented by lights near the home.

Do Mosquitoes Prefer Ultraviolet or LED Lights?

Many insect traps you see in stores contain a light source that supposedly lure mosquitoes in. However, this is not the case for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not attracted to ultraviolet or LED light any more than they are to normal lights. LEDs in particular put off less warmth than other bulbs, making them even less attractive.

Are Mosquitoes Attracted to Color?

Research has shown that mosquitoes are repelled by bright, colorful clothing. Darker clothes in tones of black, gray, or red, will make it easier for insects to find you. Wearing darker clothing traps heat in your body, resulting in more output of your natural scent. Wearing white, khaki, or bright-colored on the other hand, can help to repel mosquitoes. Lighter colors will deter mosquitoes and help keep you cool by reflecting sunlight away.

Tips to Repel Mosquitoes With Light

While light can help repel some types of mosquitoes, it is not a reliable source of prevention. Mosquitoes simply use light sources to travel. Therefore, using bug lights or light bulbs you may find in the store may not be effective in solving your mosquito problem. Always consult a professional mosquito control expert to determine the best ways to make your property less attractive to mosquitoes in East Tennessee.
