Where do Termites Live?
With the exception of Alaska, termites have been found in every state in the nation. Most species of termites thrive in warmer climates with mild, year-round temperatures, and they can easily adapt to changing climates.
Depending on the species, different termites will prefer a variety of habitats. However, the ideal environment for all termites will have one aspect in common, access to cellulose. While some species live within soil and need land to survive, others prefer to live in dry wood above ground level. These wood-boring insects have been found living in interior walls, cabinets, furniture, logs, and other wood sources found in or nearby properties.
What is the Ideal Habitat for Termites?
Termite species all differ in their preference for wood.
- Eastern subterranean termites live in the ground and feed on plant materials. In structures, they live in walls, basements, crawl spaces, and other damp areas.Â
- Formosan termites commonly infest around trees, rotten stumps, crops, woodpiles, and residential homes. Above-ground nests are often constructed in walls, attics, and roof areas of buildings.
